Vandalism at QueerShoppe in Sacramento investigated as potential bias-related incident

“I don’t think it was regular Oak Park crime or what people have thought of as neighborhood crime."

SACRAMENTO, California — A vandalism at a Sacramento store is being investigated as a potential bias-related incident, according to police.

The Sacramento Police Department said the vandalism happened at QueerShoppe, located along Broadway, on Friday night. The vandals smashed a glass window and door at the business.

Amelia Nahman, founder for the store, said one of the windows had programmed lighting, specifically of a rainbow, and that the damaged window also had stickers supporting all communities.

QueerShoppe is a vintage clothing store and the owners said the shop is open to all and intended for everyone to feel safe and confident in who they are.

“I don’t think it was regular Oak Park crime or what people have thought of as neighborhood crime. We as business owners all know everyone in the neighborhood and trust and believe in each other to keep each other safe,” Nahman said.

Police said a vandalism report was taken and bias notifications were made internally for the potential bias-related incident. The investigation is ongoing.
