OLIVEHURST, Calif. — A card skimming device was found Wednesday in a Walmart Inc. terminal in Linda, north of Olivehurst.
Around 11:30 p.m., deputies said a Walmart employee contacted the Yuba County Sheriff's Office after finding a skimming device attached to a self-checkout terminal, the office said in a news release.
In a photo of the device, it bears a striking resemblance to the ordinary, functional pay terminal.
There is no clear difference between card-skimming devices and normal pay terminals, which is why criminals are able to fool customers, the sheriff’s office told ABC10.
Skimmers can be left on card readers or pin pads anywhere from a few hours to a few days, potentially exposing the information of thousands of card users.
An investigation is underway, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at 530-749-7777.
“It is important to monitor your bank account transactions for potential fraud and if found, immediately report it to your local authorities,” the release said.
