Woman dies, child injured after standoff in Stockton

A woman died and a child was injured after a standoff Saturday night in Stockton, according to police.

STOCKTON, Calif. — A woman died and one child was injured Saturday night after a standoff in Stockton, according to police.

The standoff began at about 7:15 PM Saturday after police responded to a domestic violence incident with reports of gunshots, according to a Stockton Police Department spokesperson. A 39-year-old man opened fire at officers. Police say the man barricaded himself in an apartment when officers began firing back.

Police say the man was taken into custody after officers convinced him to peacefully surrender. He was not shot.

Officers entered the apartment and found two uninjured children, one injured child was taken to the hospital, and a woman who was pronounced dead on scene after the standoff. Prior to the standoff, a 30-year-old woman was also found with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury. No officers were injured.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
