STOCKTON, Calif. — A woman died and a child was injured Saturday night after a standoff in Stockton, according to police.

The standoff began at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday after police responded to a domestic violence incident with reports of gunshots, according to a Stockton Police Department spokesperson. A man allegedly opened fire at officers, and police say he barricaded himself in an apartment when officers began firing back.

Police say the man, 39-year-old Sim Jackson, was taken into custody after officers convinced him to peacefully surrender. He was not shot.

Officers entered the apartment and found two uninjured children. One injured child was reportedly taken to the hospital, and a 26-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Prior to the standoff, a 30-year-old woman was also located with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury in connection with the incident. No officers were injured.

There is an active investigation into the incident, police said.
