SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Region Community Foundation recently announced about 30 scholarship opportunities for college students have extended application deadlines.
Most of the scholarship deadlines have been extended to April 5 after a delayed rollout of the U.S. Department of Education's revised Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — a form schools use to calculate financial aid.
Sacramento State officials responded to the FAFSA delay by extending their initial priority filing deadline from March 2 to now April 2.
College students use scholarship funds to help pay for tuition, housing including room and board, books, transportation, food and more.
With California university students facing high tuition, housing and travel costs, Sacramento Region Community Foundation Scholarship & Awards Director Tina Bryce said scholarships serve as a vital lifeline.
"Designed to make it easier for students and their families to access funding, the revised FAFSA’s rollout has been marred by delays and technical glitches, hindering students’ ability to apply for essential financial assistance," she said. "I hope this flexibility helps students remain steadfast in pursuing their dreams, despite the extra challenges they are encountering this year with applying for financial assistance."
Scholarship awards for this year range from $500 to $10,000 and will be determined by the scholarship review committee.
In 2023 the foundation's 33 scholarships funded by local residents and businesses awarded almost $1 million to 375 people. Scholarship award notifications will be sent before June 1.
