On Thursday, California Northstate University announced plans to build the city’s first hospital.
The $750 million hospital could bring 24,000 jobs to the area over the next 10 years, according to university officials.
The university plans to build the teaching hospital, which would also include a level-2 trauma center, on an 11-acre university-owned property near Elk Grove Boulevard.
The university owns and leases retail space to businesses in the Stonelake Landing shopping center, where the hospital will be built.
Veterinary Dr. Amal Toor opened his animal hospital this year. He says he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars turning the space into a clinic. He signed a 15-year lease.
“To build it took more than a year, to build this whole inside and I had to buy equipment, X-ray machines, blood machines,” Toor said. “It’s a lot of work, a lot of research goes into it and I don’t know how I’m going to do it again because it’s a life-changing decision.”
David Brown is the owner of Dreaming Dog Brewery. He opened his business a year and a half ago and has invested nearly a million dollars in his business. While there is not an exact timeline yet, his business will have to move to make way for the new hospital.
"For every one of us that own a business here, this is our livelihood,” Brown said. “And for many of us, it's also our passion.”
Borwn says he is currently looking at all of his options. If he has to move, he may not reopen elsewhere.
Paul Wagstaffe is an attorney with California Northstate University. He says not all businesses in the shopping center will need to leave. Some businesses may be able to move to other locations in the shopping center.
The university will work with the businesses that do need to transition to another space, Wagstaffe said.
