SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A beloved novel will be translated to the big screen once again with the help of Sacramento native Greta Gerwig, director of Lady Bird.
Little Women has been translated from text to screen countless times over the years, however, the story has traditionally followed the characters of Louisa May Alcott's novel as the women grow up in the shadow of the Civil War.
The movie will reunite Gerwig with Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet. Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, and Laura Dern are also billed as cast members for the movie.
Gerwig's Little Women will be her first directorial effort since 2017's Lady Bird, a movie that echoed her time in Sacramento.

1. She broke an eight-year streak where no women were nominated for Best Director at the Oscars
Gerwig was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018, snapping an eight-year streak where no women were nominated for the Best Director category at the Oscars.
The Oscar ultimately went to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water, but Lady Bird was recognized at the Golden Globes, netting two awards for Best Motion Picture in a musical or comedy and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture for a musical or comedy.
2. St. Francis High School still loves her.
In the lead up to the 2018 Oscars, her former high school put a banner over their gates letting passerby know how proud they were of their alumna.
Students wore "I <3 Lady Bird" pins around a campus that was lively with spirit and Lady Bird fanaticism. The school even claimed that it saw an uptick in admissions interest in the years surrounding the movie’s release.

3. Her school mates were inspirations for characters in Lady Bird.
"It's not literally autobiographical, but it's really close to my heart and it's really personal," Gerwig told ABC10 during a 2017 screening of Lady Bird in Sacramento.
Connor Mickiewicz was said to be the inspiration behind Danny O'Neill, one of the main characters in Lady Bird. Gerwig and Mickiewicz dated while at Jesuit and St. Francis High School's, respectively.
"The relationship between Lady Bird and Danny may be loosely based off some interactions we had," Mickiewicz told ABC10 in 2018.
The daughter of Gerwig’s high school drama teacher was also said to be the inspiration for the character Julie in the movie and has a brief cameo in the film.
4. Her alma mater Barnard College honored and recognizes her as a trailblazer in her field
Gerwig was a 2006 graduate of Barnard College. During her time there, she had written plays and even co-founded an improv group called the "Tea Party Ensemble."
Following the success of Lady Bird, the college honored their alumnae with their Joan Rivers '54 Trailblazer Award at their Annual Gala in April this year. It's an award given to an honoree that demonstrates the boldness, creativity, courage, and strength of character that was exemplified in Joan Rivers' career.
Gerwig was recognized for being the fifth woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director and the first nominated for a directorial debut.
Barnard College has also added her to their Open Door series at their new Milstein Center. According to Barnard College spokesperson Alli Cooke, the series highlights the alumnae who are considered trailblazers in their field.
