MODESTO, Calif. — The family-owned E. & J. Gallo Winery has just made a massive deal to become an even bigger winery, acquiring dozens of new brands that you've heard of before.
They cut a deal with the producer of Corona and Modelo beer, called Constellation Brands, to buy out 34 of their wine and spirit brands.
Constellation Brands will hang on to their beer, but a spokesperson for Gallo said this deal includes some big names like Black Box wine, Cook's sparkling wine, Wild Horse and many more.
Constellation said many of the wines sell for under $11 a bottle, although some wines retail at higher price points.
Gallo is already the biggest family-owned winery in the world — with more than 6,500 employees — but this deal will add more than 700 staff members to their worldwide team.
The company says they do plan to offer jobs to the majority of employees at each of the acquired locations, as long as all hiring criteria are met.
"We are encouraging all interested Constellation employees to join the Gallo team," a spokesperson for Gallo said.
This deal also includes multiple wine production facilities across the United States — in California, Hogue Cellars in Washington, and Canandaigua in New York.
It's too early to say how this could impact Modesto specifically but big picture, CEO Joseph E. Gallo said in an emailed statement:
"While we continue to invest in our premium and luxury businesses, we see a tremendous opportunity with this acquisition to bring new consumers into the wine category. We will continue to provide our customers and consumers with quality products at every price point."
