CALIFORNIA, USA — California Black Women's Health Project is a non-profit organization aimed to improve the health of Black women in the state from preconception through aging. It's celebrating 30 years of advocacy, education, outreach and policy.
"Really and truly, if there is an area of health that impacts a Black woman or a Black girl, we want to be involved and we want to be sure that we are supporting them in that area," Director of Communications and Marketing Geneses Abril said.
The project emphasizes mental health. Specifically in Sacramento, it is starting a program called Gen Z Speaks. Its focus is supporting Black youth and young adults between the ages of 17 and 25.
"Early intervention and prevention of mental health illness symptoms, awareness, reduction of mental health stigma, and increased access and utilization of mental health services in the Sacramento area, along with social isolation reduction," Northern California Program Manager Dominque Paxton said about the program.
To celebrate three decades of hard work, the project is hosting its "Women Who Dared: A Time to Care" event. It's Saturday, May 4 at the Guild Theatre in Sacramento. The event honors Black women who have impacted the group it serves. There will be food, live music, mocktails and an intergenerational panel discussion on mental health.
All proceeds support the project's efforts. You can buy a ticket or donate to the organization on this website.
