Health officials investigating 3 new cases of coronavirus in South Bay Area counties

Three people between Santa Clara and San Mateo counties are in isolation for concerns over coronavirus. Two of those cases have been confirmed.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Officials are investigating three new cases of coronavirus in the South Bay Area, health officials in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties announced Monday. Two of those cases have been confirmed and one is a “presumptive positive."

Two adult men in Santa Clara County were diagnosed with the COVID-19 coronavirus, bringing the total of confirmed cases in the county up to nine, according to the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. One of the men had contact with a person confirmed to have the virus in another county. The other man had household contact with someone who was confirmed to have had the virus. Both men are under home isolation, health officials said.

Santa Clara health officials say they do not expect further increase in coronavirus cases in the county, but they are still working to identify if anyone may have come in contact with the new cases.

Meanwhile, in San Mateo County, an adult also is “presumptive positive” for coronavirus and is pending confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]. This person has been hospitalized and is in isolation. According to San Mateo County Health officials, the source of this person’s exposure is unknown.

“This new case of a positive case of novel coronavirus has happened in San Mateo County and we share the concerns of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that we all need to be prepared for COVID-19 to spread within the United States,” Dr. Scott Morrow, San Mateo County Health Officer, said in a press release.

If confirmed, this will be the second case of coronavirus in San Mateo County.

These cases come just a day after health officials in the North Bay counties of  Alameda and Solano announced two healthcare workers at NorthBay VacaValley Hospital were presumptive positive for coronavirus.

The Alameda County and Solano County public health departments issued a joint press release on Sunday after one worker from each respective county had contact with the community-acquired coronavirus case currently hospitalized at UC Davis Medical Center. Both of those workers were also placed in home isolation pending confirmation by the CDC.
