SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Negotiations continue in Washington over the new economic relief package.
Jane Callejo lives in Cameron Park and said it's time for lawmakers to come to an agreement as Californians face another shutdown.
“I was wondering why it’s taking so long. The pandemic is already here and it’s happening already and a lot of people can’t work - they are having the shutdown,” Callejo said.
President Donald Trump approved the Cares Act on March 27, 2020, and the first relief checks started appearing in peoples' bank accounts about three weeks later. Since the IRS did a lot of work setting up payments the first time around, another round of checks could go out much faster.
The earliest people would see another stimulus check is around January 2021
The new stimulus package lawmakers are currently negotiating would provide a one-time $600 check to most individuals.
Callejo said lawmakers giving the American people half of what they received in stimulus money the first round is not enough.
“I wish it was a little bit more than that because $600 is not that much; $1,200 was not that much either,” Callejo said.
Callejo is not confident everyone in her family will receive the money once it's allocated due to the fact her son did not get the first round of stimulus checks after she and her husband worked tirelessly to correct his dependent status with the IRS.
“I am a little worried because if he didn’t get it the first time then he may not get it because I don’t know if the record on their part is corrected,” Callejo said.
