CALIFORNIA, USA — Around 185,000 Americans will find out they have blood cancer this year. That's one person every three minutes. There is no specific screening for cancers like lymphoma, myeloma, and leukemia so doctors say it's essential to pay attention to the common signs. If you have them, it's best to visit your doctor as soon as possible.
Signs of blood cancer
- Fatigue
- Lowered immune system
- Easy bruising
- Bleeding gums
Thanks to fundraisers like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Sacramento Light the Night Walk, research on these cancers is improving. Head of Hematology for Sutter Medical Center Sacramento, Dr. Elias Kiwan, said coming together as a community to donate and participate in a walk like this is a way to bring people out of the darkness that surrounds diagnosis.
"Patients by themselves cannot do anything, we need to support caregivers and community as a team. It's a small family, then we have the big family, so we are a part of that family," Kiwan said.
The 2023 Sacramento Light the Night Walk is on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Sutter Health Park. The doors open at 5 p.m. and the walk begins at 7 p.m. You can register and donate on the society's website.
