SACRAMENTO, Calif. — This week the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, approved new Pfizer and Moderna MRNA vaccines for anyone 6 months and older.
The FDA says you are eligible for the updated vaccines at least two months after having your last shot.
If you recently tested positive for the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says you may want to wait three months after having COVID-19 to get these updated vaccines.
Walmart posted on its website that appointments will begin Sept. 6. CVS hopes to start in late August.
For Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente patients vaccinations are currently paused and will resume mid-September with the new shot.
CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen says testing, treatment and vaccines remain top priorities.
“All of these vaccines prevent the worst of these infections. That means fewer visits to the doctor, fewer hospitalizations and more time to enjoy the fall and winter with family and loved ones,” said Dr. Cohen.
The new vaccines were announced as the CDC said California’s current COVID-19 activity based on wastewater testing is very high. And the west is the region with the highest Covid activity.
The last time COVID-19 activity was this high in California was the week of Christmas 2023.
