Sacramento clinical trial could bring inhalable insulin to children

The American Diabetes Association says around 280,000 of the 37 million diabetes patients are children.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Afrezza is an inhalable form of insulin that's changed the lives of many adults across the country. Research shows it has helped better blood sugar control and many users are simply happier using an inhalable over an injection.

The Center of Excellence in Diabetes and Endocrinology in Sacramento is the only local medical office participating in the clinic trial testing this form of insulin in children.

Physician Assistant Carly Haaland said Afrezza could help get rid of anxiety for both children and their parents.

"The biggest issue I see especially in younger kiddos is fear and anxiety around injections, and if you look at the studies that's like 50% of patients who have that type of anxiety around injection pain. So, Afrezza it mostly eliminates that," Haaland said.

This trial is about two years old but it's still accepting new patients through December. Children need to be between 4 and 17 years old with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. You can sign your child up on this website

Haaland said the hope is to finish the trial by December 2024.
