Seniors learn the benefits of strength training at East Sacramento gym

At the Capitol Longevity Training class, members learn the ins and outs of strength training, regardless of age.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On your average Monday or Wednesday morning, about a half dozen seniors can be found inside an East Sacramento gym moving kettlebells, dragging sleds and lifting dumbbells.

At the Capitol Longevity Training class, members learn the ins and outs of strength training, regardless of age.

"It's a world of difference for me," said Jeannette Yim, whose been at it for about six months. "I can do any kind of activity; I can keep up with my kids and grandkids."

Research shows that resistance training can help people fight off age-related muscle loss, according to Capitol strength and conditioning coach Nick Troquato.

There are other benefits, too, he said.

"They're more social, they're more likely to go and try new things and it just makes them really enjoy the later years of life," he said.

Tami Hackbarth has noticed differences too.

"My posture’s better, my sleep is better, my clothes are fitting better. It’s kind of everything," Hackbarth said, calling her progress over just a few months "mind-blowing."

Though it comes with hard work and even some discomfort, Yim hopes others will see her progress too and be inspired.

"I would like to fill this program with other people like me, who have an auto-immune disease and just say, 'Come on, you can do it!'" she said.
