Mule Creek State Prison inmate killed, officials investigating

Prison officials say Robert Aranda was found dead in his cell Thursday with several injuries and stab wounds

AMADOR COUNTY, Calif. — Mule Creek State Prison officials are investigating after an inmate was found dead in his cell with stab wounds.

According to a news release, Robert Aranda was found unresponsive around 1:40 p.m. Thursday. He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.

Officials identified his alleged attacker as his cellmate, 38-year-old Alexander Mateuz.

Aranda was sentenced to 13 years in prison in Nov. 2021 for two counts of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm.

Mateuz was serving life in prison for a 2008 third-strike conviction of assault with a firearm.

Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County houses more than 3,800 incarcerated people. The Amador County Coroner will determine Aranda’s official cause of death.
