SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Boss of the Road advertisement, which dated back to the 1920s, was recently removed from a historic downtown building, according to the Center for Sacramento History.
The 20th century advertisement for Boss of the Road overalls, has been on 910 2nd Street for a century, said Marcia Eymann, a Sacramento historian. It was recently removed and painted over to advertise for the Ambiance Lounge, a new bar.
“Normally, in the process they should have asked for a permit to do those things, which they wouldn’t have gotten,” Eymann said. “But at least we would have been aware that it was something they were considering.”
The advertisement is one of the few painted signs left in Old Sacramento. Historians said the advertisement is significant because the San Francisco company that painted it, Boss of the Road, was founded during the California Gold Rush era to make clothes for miners.
Old Sacramento business owner David Hylton said he walked past the advertisement many times over the 30 years he’s visited the area.
“The sign was a old sign,” Hylton said. “It has to do with jeans and the sign that’s up there now is just, it doesn’t even look like Old Sac…it’s an abomination.”
Members with the Center for Sacramento History said it’s important to preserve the history in Old Sacramento because it is a National Historic Landmark.
We have reached out to the Ambiance Lounge for comment, but have not heard back from its management.
