1 dead after accident in San Joaquin County

Police said two cars collided head-on along Highway 12 and were then hit by another car.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — One person is dead after an accident along Highway 12 in San Joaquin County Tuesday afternoon.

The crash was reported around 4:10 p.m. along Highway 12, west of Guard Road.

CHP spokesperson Officer Angel Arseo said a Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord were traveling in opposite directions until the Volkswagen veered over double yellow lines and into the opposing lane, hitting the Honda head on. It's not clear why the Volkswagen veered into the other lane.

After the crash, a Toyota Prius also crashed into the cars. While the Honda and Volkswagen stayed on the roadway, the Toyota continued and eventually hit a ditch.

The Volkswagen driver died after the crash, and the Honda driver had major but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Prius had minor injuries.

CHP said all drivers were wearing seatbelts. It's not clear if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
