2 dead in South Sacramento house fire

Fire officials said Wednesday a single-story house fire in South Sacramento left at least two people dead.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two people died after a house fire in south Sacramento Wednesday.

According to the Sacramento Fire Department, the blaze happened along the 1900 block of Niantic Way, and it was under heavy fire when firefighters arrived.

Of the victims, one was found dead inside the home by fire crews and the other was taken to the hospital but they died later on.

“It’s heartbreaking for anyone in this situation,“ said Jessica Perales, who lives down the street from the home.

She and her other neighbors were worried about what happened after hearing the sirens go by.

"Terrifying, I felt it was scary for everyone in the neighborhood," she said.

Sacramento Fire Captain Justin Sylvia said there were seven people living at the home. It's considered a room and board style property.

The wind made the firefight challenging, but crews were able to keep the fire from extending to another home.

Fire investigators were at the property Wednesday afternoon and don’t suspect criminal activity was involved. They said it has been ruled as an undetermined fire, meaning there wasn't enough evidence to determine the exact cause.
