SACRAMENTO, Calif — 10 On Your Side is taking flight to shed light on a major concern at a public housing complex in Sacramento.
Melody Shultz, a concerned Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA) resident, says she's lived in the complex for 17 years.
"We have a lot of water problems. The first month that I moved in here everything on my kitchen side flew off the roof. I had no shingles, no paper, no nothing and the whole ceiling collapsed in the front room," said Shultz.
Shultz says things have not gotten better at the unit she rents from the SHRA in the years since moving in. She invited 10 On Your Side to take a bird's-eye view of the condition of her roof, which had shingles in the gutter.
"How's anything supposed to drain with anything like that?" said Shultz.
She says the outside conditions are starting to take a toll inside, too.
"You can see how the whole ceiling is sinking. It's going to go. It's collecting the moisture. It's going to give me a heart attack from the fear, I swear. My chest gets heavy. I'm scared," said Shultz, adding she fears about the electricity.
"It's really 17 years of begging and pleading for someone to help me. It's all I ever wanted. Just help me," Shultz added.
10 On Your Side saw the property firsthand and took the images straight to the housing agency. Within 24 hours, they had crews on the roof making repairs, and weeks later, the roof was replaced.
"I think it's about time, but I just need to thank you because we got her done," said Shultz.
Given the condition of the apartment, Shultz was temporarily relocated to a hotel so additional work could be done.
In a statement SHRA said the following:
"As one of the largest landlords in Sacramento, SHRA provides safe, decent housing for 50,000 residents. Our staff works diligently to make sure our properties are well maintained and livable."
