SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Affordable housing developer Mutual Housing California opened a new 127-unit apartment complex Monday for extremely low income families. It includes 67 units saved for residents who were previously unhoused.
"It's what we call a large family property, so the property is designed to serve families," Mutual Housing California CEO Roberto Jiménez told ABC10. "About half of those, I believe, are what they call No Place Like Home funded."
He says the Mutual Housing on the Boulevard project had more involvement from the community and local agencies than anything they've done before.
"This one is particularly exciting because we bought the property in 2009 or 10 and we've been struggling to put the funding together since then," Jiménez said. "And just about four years ago, we found the funding after the voters in California passed Proposition 1 and 2, the money became available."
The community includes one, two and three-bedroom apartments, a large community room, laundry facilities, playground, community garden, a Chromebook lending library and more.
Mutual Housing California officials also dedicated a garden at the apartment complex to Fernando Cibrian, who spent more than a decade as a leader at Mutual Housing.
