2 children abducted in Reno found safe by CHP near Truckee

The children were found safe by CHP officers after a parental abduction in Reno. Their mother and her male companion were identified as suspects.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Two children abducted in Reno, Nevada, were found safe Sunday after California Highway Patrol spotted a suspect vehicle near Soda Springs.

A 7-year-old and a 9-year-old were found safe by CHP officers after a parental abduction in Reno, according to a news release by CHP’s Truckee office

“The mother of the children, and her male companion, were taken into custody and have been charged with kidnapping,” the release said.

The incident was originally reported by CHP’s Chico office, and it began with a be-on-the-lookout (BOL) alert, CHP said. The suspects were believed to be heading toward California with both children.

Around 4:15 p.m., a CHP Truckee officer spotted the vehicle traveling east on Interstate 80 east of Soda Springs, according to law enforcement. After a high-risk stop at Donner Rest Area, the man was apprehended and the children were found safe, CHP said.

Their mother was located a short time later by CHP’s Gold Run area office along Rainbow Road near I-80, and she was also taken into custody, authorities said.

The children were safely transferred to the care of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, which returned them to their guardians, CHP said. Both suspects have been booked into the Nevada County Jail on charges of kidnapping, law enforcement said.
