RANCHO MURIETA, Calif. — Five people were taken to the hospital after a chase led to a crash in Rancho Murieta Monday evening.
According to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the incident was reported around 8:15 p.m. in the area of Jackson Road and Murieta Parkway.
The California Highway Patrol said the incident was connected to a report of a Hyundai Elantra speeding in Amador County just before 8 p.m.
Police tried to do an enforcement stop, but the driver didn't yield, which led to the chase, according to police.
The Hyundai continued onto Highway 49 and onto Highway 16 westbound into Sacramento County, eventually approaching Murieta Parkway. Officials said the Hyundai was going about 80 mph when it collided with a woman driving a Rivian RS1 southbound on Murieta.
The Hyundai caught fire after the collision, and a CHP officer was able to get the driver and his passenger out of the car to safe area.
Both the driver, a man, and the passenger, a woman, had major injuries and were taken to a hospital.
The driver of the Rivian, along with their two passengers, had moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Hyundai is suspected to be a stolen vehicle.
