SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The 20-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed a woman in South Sacramento Tuesday was arrested after he turned himself in, sheriff's officials said.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, the shooting happened just after 9 a.m. in the 7800 block of Orchard Woods Circle.
When deputies arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. The woman, later identified by family as 19-year-old Dajha Richards, was taken to a hospital where she later died.
Witnesses told deputies the person who shot the woman was armed with a handgun and ran through the neighborhood, officials said.
Deputies identified 20-year-old Damion Horton as the suspect in the shooting and shut down surrounding areas to search for him. Horton was taken into custody Wednesday after he turned himself in to the sheriff's department.
Authorities say Horton's mother, Yolanda Smith, was also arrested for allegedly being an accessory.
Family confirmed to ABC10 that the victim, Dajha Richards, recently had a baby.
Friends and family gathered for a community candlelight vigil at Orchard Wood Circle by where the shooting took place.
"She was loving and caring," said her cousin Andranay Richards, "Anybody she came across couldn't say anything bad about her."
Ebony Douglas, Richards mother, could barely hold back her tears as she talked about her daughter.
"I didn't know you were gonna take my child's life," Douglas said during the vigil. "It's killing me so bad."
The outpouring of love from the community has helped the family know she was loved.
"I didn't even know that she was known by this many people," Richards said. "It was people I've known for years that I didn't even know was that close to her. Just to know she had that much love in the community warms my heart."
