3 killed in head-on crash in Sutter County identified. CHP says alcohol was a factor

Shane Loudermilk, 20, of Gridley; Juan Diego Soto Castro, 43, of Yuba City; and Ricardo Joso Soto Castro, 48, of Yuba City, were identified by the coroner.

SUTTER COUNTY, Calif. — The three people killed after a head-on collision late Saturday morning in Sutter County have been identified.

The Sutter County Coroner’s Office said Shane Loudermilk, 20, of Gridley; Juan Diego Soto Castro, 43, of Yuba City; and Ricardo Joso Soto Castro, 48, of Yuba City, were killed in the two-vehicle crash around 11:40 a.m. along Highway 99 near Tudor Road.

There were seven people total involved in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. Five people occupied a Dodge Challenger, and two people rode in a Nissan Sentra.

The Nissan was traveling north, and the Dodge was traveling south at a high speed, CHP’s Yuba-Sutter office said. The Dodge allegedly crossed over solid, double-yellow lines and crashed head-on into the Nissan, officers said.

The two people in the Nissan died; the third fatality was the driver of the Dodge, according to law enforcement. Three others in the Dodge were taken to the hospital, and the fourth and final occupant was picked up by a relative, CHP said.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, officers said.

The crash caused road closures on northbound Highway 99 at Highway 113, but they have since been lifted.
