9 hurt in commuter train derailment

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Authorities say nine people are hurt after a commuter train derailed and sent one railcar into a creek in rural Alameda County.

<p>An Altamont Corridor Express train derailed in rural Alameda County, injuring 14 people. The train was heading from San Jose to Stockton.</p>

Update 11:08 p.m.

The Alameda County Fire Department tweets that nine, not 14, people were hurt in the derailment. Four of them suffered serious injuries.

The agency states that 196 non-injured passengers were taken to the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.

Update 10:32 p.m.

Alaemda County Sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly says a large tree that fell onto the tracks during heavy rain caused the derailment.

Kelly says it's "a miracle" no one was killed in the accident that injured 14 people, four of them seriously.

Altamont Corridor Express tweeted that buses are en route to pick up passengers. ACE train service is canceled tomorrow.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - An Altamont Corridor Express train derailed and sent one railcar into a creek in Niles Canyon near Sunol. Officials say it was raining heavily in the area at the time of the accident.

Tweets from the Alamaeda County Fire Department show the train half-submerged in the water. Authorities say 14 people were injured, four of them seriously.

The train was heading from San Jose to Stockton.

The Fremont Police Department tweets Niles Canyon Road is closed during the rescue.
