NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — An Antelope man was sentenced Friday in connection with a deadly DUI crash in 2021 that left four out of five members of a North Highlands family dead.
According to the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office, Michael Kelley was sentenced 36 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of murder.
The conviction is the result of a Nov. 20, 2021, deadly crash that left mother Brittney Montano, father Antonio Montano and two of their three children – Marianna and Antonio – dead.
According to prosecutors, he was drunk when he got on the freeway outside of Truckee and drove in the wrong direction, hitting a family of five head-on. Four of them died, and the sole surviving family member was a 4-year-old boy.
Prosecutors say he was charged with murder in this case due to a prior DUI conviction in 2019.
District Attorney Jesse Wilson described the crash as “one of the most heartbreaking cases” in his career.
