An Arden jewelry store hand-crafts replica badges to donate to the families of fallen police officers.
Syd Curtis, 71, of S. Curtis Fine Jewelers has made it a practice for 25 years. The guy has a soft spot for law enforcement, after all he spent 13 years as a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The business has donated hundreds of gold and silver replica badges to the families of fallen officers across California.
“We donate a gold badge to the wife and then we’ll do a silver badge for each of their children,” Curtis said.
In fact, it was the downtime after an on-the-job injury with the sheriff’s department that inspired what became a business going 42 years strong.
Curtis said he went to a jewelry making class and later turned his garage into a shop to craft. He later left the department and took on a job as a jeweler full time.
