Arson suspect arrested after two fires sparked along Butte County highway

Gary Kevin Fuller, of Oroville, was arrested following an investigation of the two fires that happened along Highway 162, officials say.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — A man is suspected of arson after two fires sparked within less than two hours of each other in Butte County on Friday.

Oroville resident Gary Kevin Fuller was arrested following an investigation of the two fires that happened along Highway 162, according to the Cal Fire/Butte County Fire Department.

Officials said crews responded to reports of a vegetation fire near Oroville in the area of Highway 162 and Arbol Avenue. The fire was quickly contained and a witness provided a description of the suspect, officials said.

About an hour and a half later, a second vegetation fire happened roughly one and a half miles away in the area of Highway 162 and Foothill Boulevard. While investigating that fire, a different witness provided a description that matched the suspect from the previous fire.

While Cal Fire was responding to the second fire, Butte County deputies observed a suspect who matched both descriptions and detained Fuller.

Fuller was identified as the suspect based on witness statements and evidence recovered from the fires, along with evidence recovered from him, officials said.

Fuller was booked into the Butte County Jail on two separate counts of arson.
