Athens Fire: Evacuation warning lifted, roads reopened as fire containment grows in Placer County

The fire, which started Friday afternoon, sparked from a vehicle near Western Placer Waste Management at Athens Avenue and Fiddyment Road.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A fire with a dangerous rate of spread is prompting evacuation warnings in Placer County.

According to Cal Fire NEU, the Athens Fire is about 260 acres as of 3 p.m. Friday and is in grass after spreading from a vehicle at Athens Avenue near Fiddyment Road. That's close to Western Placer Waste Management.

Evacuation warnings were lifted just before 4 p.m. Friday and all closed roads were reopened around 4:30 p.m.

If you live in a wildfire-prone zone, Cal Fire says create a defensible space around your home. Defensible space is an area around a building in which vegetation and other debris are completely cleared. At least 100 feet is recommended.

The Department of Homeland Security says to assemble an emergency kit with important documents, N95 respirator masks and supplies to grab with you if you’re forced to leave at a moment’s notice.
