Applegate Fire containment at 55 percent; no more homes lost

The 459-acre Applegate Fire is 55 percent contained as of Friday evening, Cal Fire said.

UPDATE 6:20 p.m.: Fire containment reaches 55 percent. Acreage burned: 459.

UPDATE: 1 p.m.: Evacuation center at Sierra vista Community Center in Colfax closed. Shelter at 100 East Street in Auburn remains open.

UPDATE 9:22 a.m.: Caltrans has closed one lane of Interstate 80 between Heather Glen and Weimar due to the fire.

The fire has destroyed six homes and four outbuildings between Auburn and Colfax.

The following areas under an Evacuation Order (Mandatory) were being reduced to an Evacuation Warning effective at noon, Friday:

All areas and roads East of I-80 to the American River and North of the intersection of Swanson Lane and Ponderosa Way to John Muir Road. All areas and roads East of I-80 to the American River, South of Hidden Meadow Way, and North of Pepper Ranch Road.

Proof of residency will be required for entry into the repopulated areas.

The following area remains under an Evacuation Order (Mandatory):

All areas and roads East of Applegate Road at Cody Lane to the American River, South of Swanson Lane and Ponderosa Way and North of Hidden Meadow Way.

The following road closure points remain in effect:

Dead end of Paoli (South end of the Railroad, South of Campora). Ponderosa Way, South of Swanson Ln. Eagle Ridge Rd., at Forest Hill Rd. Applegate Rd., at Hidden Meadow Way. Applegate Rd., at Rigby Ln.
