CHP motorcycle officer seriously injured in crash near Auburn

Based on an initial investigation, around 6:35 a.m. a driver traveling southbound on Highway 49 ran a red light and collided with the officer.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A California Highway Patrol officer was seriously injured in a crash in Placer County near Auburn Friday.

California Highway Patrol said a motorcycle officer was heading northbound on Highway 49 near Shale Ridge Road. Based on an initial investigation, around 6:35 a.m. a driver traveling southbound on Highway 49 ran a red light and collided with the officer.

The officer was ejected from his motorcycle. The officer has major injuries and was taken to a hospital. His identity hasn't been released, according to California Highway Patrol. 

The driver of the vehicle wasn't hurt and they stayed at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol. Drugs and alcohol aren't a factor in the crash. No one has been arrested at this time.

Highway 49 was closed between Bell Road and Dry Creek Road near Auburn due to the crash, according to Caltrans. It has since reopened.

The crash is under investigation.
