PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A man is dead and a deputy was injured in a shooting Thursday in Colfax.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office said around 11 p.m. deputies were patrolling near the 500 block of South Auburn Street when they found a van in a McDonald's parking lot. The van matched the description of one involved in a burglary in the area the day before. Deputies contacted a man in his 30s who was in the van.
The sheriff's office said the man was uncooperative. The man shot at the deputies and deputies shot back. During the shooting, one of the deputies was hit and was taken to a hospital. They are in critical, but stable condition and expected to survive.
The sheriff's office said the man was barricaded in his van. The man died at the scene.
All deputies involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave, which is the sheriff's office policy while the investigation is ongoing.
The man's identity hasn't been released. The area is closed while the shooting is investigated. The sheriff's office said the shooting isn't connected to an earlier incident near the same area in Colfax.
