AUBURN, Calif. — The driver and passenger of a gravel truck were killed in a crash on State Route 49 in Placer County Thursday, California Highway Patrol's Auburn office said.

According to the CHP, a man was driving a Peterbilt dump truck carrying gravel north on State Route 49 near the Confluence around 7:15 a.m. Thursday.

The driver was not able to stop at the intersection of State Route 49 and El Dorado Street/ Old Foresthill Road for unknown reasons, the CHP said.

The truck crashed into a steep dirt and rock embankment leaving the occupant and driver dead and several thousand pounds of gravel spilled on the roadway.

The driver was identified as a 68-year-old man from West Sacramento.

Witnesses reportedly told the CHP that the driver of the truck was experiencing mechanical issues at the time of the crash.

The CHP says it is investigating the deadly crash and that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors.
