Man reasonably feared for his safety in shooting of black bear in South Lake Tahoe, officials say

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the bear went into the home through backdoor and tried to go for the person's dog.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — A man who shot and killed a bear that went into his home in South Lake Tahoe Monday was not cited, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).

The BEAR League said it got reports from a neighbor that a bear was sleeping in a tree in a yard. According to the BEAR League, the neighbor said that, after the bear woke up, it went into the house. The home's resident reportedly chased the bear out and shot the bear.

The BEAR League called for the shooter to be held accountable.

However, Peter Tira, spokesperson for CDFW, said the homeowner was in reasonable fear for his and his dog's safety.

CDFW said the 75 to 85-pound bear went into the home through a back door. The man shouted at the bear and waved his arms, but the bear started huffing, a warning behavior, and went for his dog, according to Tira.

The man went to his bedroom, grabbed a rifle, went back to his living room and shot the bear twice.

The bear left the house and climbed a tree before it fell off of it. Tira said the bear looked like it was suffering, so the man shot it to euthanize it and called 911 right after.
