NEWCASTLE, Calif. — A bicyclist died Monday after being hit by a truck near a Placer County elementary school.
According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened before 11 a.m. on Lozanos Road near Ophir Elementary School.
CHP says the unidentified bicyclist was hit by a truck and fatally injured.
The elementary school was put on lockdown while investigators were at the scene, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
“As we come to terms with this heartbreaking event, let us remember the importance of road safety and vigilance, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists,” wrote CHP's Auburn office in a social media post.
Ophir is an unincorporated area of Placer County located a few miles west of Auburn.
