Body found in 2001 near Rio Vista identified as missing Sacramento man

Investigators say Craig Ott disappeared in January 2001 under unknown circumstances.

SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. — The body of a man found in Minor Slough on Ryer Island more than 23 years ago has finally been identified.

According to the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, the body of John Doe #3 was found on March 11, 2001. At the time, investigators spent a year trying to identify him, but were unsuccessful and he was buried without being identified.

The coroner’s office started reopening cold cases in summer 2023, including John Doe #3’s case. His body was exhumed and through DNA testing and forensic genealogy was identified as Craig William Ott, of Sacramento.

Investigators say Ott disappeared in January 2001 under unknown circumstances.
