SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The nearly five-mile-long Del Rio Trail opened in May 2024. The only missing piece was the bridge over I-5 and Riverside Boulevard connecting the Del Rio Trail to the Sacramento River Bike Trail, which has never been officially open to the public.
ABC10 reached out the the city of Sacramento about the timeline for the bridge's completion back in May.
At the time, a spokesperson with the city of Sacramento said it was on course to be completed on time and additional testing had to be done before it could officially open. Since it's a long trail, the city told ABC10 they decided to open the rest of the Del Rio Trail early since the bridge was the only portion left to be completed. They aimed for the bridge to be open in summer 2024.
Now, city spokesperson Gabby Miller says the Del Rio Trail bridge widening over I-5 has to be replaced.
"Upon assessment, the City’s project team determined the bridge was not built to required specifications. The City will be working with the contractor to determine the schedule for removal and replacement. The bridge—which has never been formally opened for public use— remains closed to the public until a new one is constructed," said Miller.
The city provided ABC10 with a letter from a Senior Engineer with the City of Sacramento to Mountain Methods, Inc., the general contractor, rejecting the Land Park Underpass widening.
It says, in part: "After investigating available information, the City’s engineer of record (Dokken Engineering) has determined that the widening of the Land Park Underpass was built out of conformance with the plans, specifications, and approved concrete mixture designs, and cannot be accepted.
The City rejects this work per City Standard Specifications 5-21, Removal of Rejected Materials and Structures.
The City finds that the lightweight concrete and rebar placed at the Land Park Underpass Widening is nonconforming to the Contract requirements and is rejected. The Contractor must remove the structure widening and replace it with the prequalified and authorized materials in conformance with the approved contract. The contractor is directed to provide a plan and schedule for the removal and replacement no later than September 30, 2024."
