Butte Fire in Amador and Calaveras Counties is now 70% contained, all mandatory evacuations lifted

Cal Fire reports 70,760 acres have been burned in the Butte Fire, and as of Friday night, it was 63% contained

Cal Fire reports 70,760 acres have been burned by a large wildfire burning in Amador and Calaveras Counties and as of Saturday morning, it was 70% contained. 

Some residential evacuation orders began to be lifted for that fire, called the Butte Fire, Tuesday evening.

Two deaths have been confirmed in the Butte Fire, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department. 

All evacuations were lifted and road closures reopened in Amador County from the Butte Fire, Cal Fire announced Tuesday evening. Click here for the latest evacuation information for Calaveras County residents.  According to CAL FIRE's spokesperson Daniel Berlant, all mandatory evacuations on the Butte Fire in Calaveras County were lifted Sunday morning. 

The Butte Fire started last Wednesday in an area just east of the town of Jackson. By the end of last week, the fire was spreading so fast mandatory evacuations were ordered with little notice for the towns of San Andreas and Angels Camp.

The department reports 535 residential buildings, 347 outbuildings and 41 other structures have been damaged or destroyed by the wildfire and 6,400 structures remained threatened.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A total of 4,164 personnel are battling the Butte Fire.

Cal Fire said the behavior of the fire remained minimal throughout the day on Friday, helping crews continue to progress with controlling the perimeter.
