CA Fish & Wildlife to install cameras in central Roseville after mountain lion sightings

As of now there are no photos, videos or even tracks in the area to confirm the reported sightings.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Some people in Roseville are on edge after two reported mountain lion sightings in the city. A mother and her cub were spotted near East Roseville Parkway and Taylor Road this week.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is installing cameras in the area to see if they can spot the mountain lions because – as of now – there are no photos, videos or even tracks in the area to confirm the sightings.

Krysten Kellum with CDFW says the big cats were probably following Antelope Creek in from their natural habitat in the foothills.

“This certainly wouldn’t be the first time a mountain lion came up in that greenbelt area. There are deer in that area and deer are a primary food source,” said Kellum.

The city of Roseville is asking residents to be vigilant.

“They’ve both been in open space area along (the) I-80 North corridor. We haven’t seen spottings in residential streets, neighborhoods, parking lots,” said Pam Allen, a spokesperson for the city of Roseville.

They recommend bringing your pets inside at night if you live nearby, and don’t walk the trail near Antelope Creek from dusk until dawn.

And if you do encounter a mountain lion?

“Never approach a mountain lion. Always give them an escape route. Don’t run, don’t turn your back. Face the animal, make loud noises and try to make yourself bigger. If you have small children, put them up on your shoulders,” said Kellum.
