Calaveras County mom arrested after infant left on hot asphalt

Witnesses told deputies the child's mother was yelling at dogs, throwing rocks at animals and left the infant on the hot asphalt without returning to get her.

COPPEROPOLIS, Calif. — A Calaveras County mom is facing charges including child endangerment after her 1-year-old was left alone on the side of the road.

According to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, it happened Sunday around 8:30 p.m. near Little John Road and Copper Cove Drive in Copperopolis.

Witnesses told deputies 33-year-old Ashley Agasi was carrying a child as she was walking. They later reported she was yelling at dogs, throwing rocks at animals and trying to flag down cars.

Deputies said Agasi set the infant down on the hot pavement to confront a driver who stopped. A bystander was reportedly concerned and picked up the child. Deputies allege Agasi left the area and didn’t return for her daughter.

Deputies went to Agasi’s home to see if she was caring for other children. Investigators say she was uncooperative and tried to push deputies away.

Due to the dangerous conditions of the home and suspicion Agasi was under the influence of meth, Child Protective Services staff were requested to take custody of the child and assist with the investigation.

Agasi was reportedly taken to the hospital and arrested. She was booked on suspicion of child endangerment, being under the influence of a controlled substance and resisting officers.
