California inmate's death being investigated as homicide

Officials say inmate Kyle Cooper was found unresponsive in his cell.

FOLSOM, Calif. — The death of an inmate at a state prison in Folsom is being investigated as a homicide, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. 

Officials said staff responded an an alarm at 3:55 a.m. Saturday and approached a cell and found one of the inmates, Kyle Cooper, unresponsive with head trauma.

Medical personnel performed life-saving measures on Cooper, but was later transported to an outside hospital where he was later pronounced dead by a doctor. 

Rahshan Mackey, who stayed in the same cell as Cooper, was placed in restricted housing during the investigation of Cooper's death. Cooper's death will be later determined by the Sacramento County Coroner, officials. 

Cooper, 50, was transferred from the Sacramento County Main Jail to the state prison since Aug. 11, 2015 and was serving a 37-year sentence for second-degree robbery with the use of a firearm as a second striker and possessing/owning a firearm as a felon or addict. 

Mackey, 38, came to the state prison from Alameda County on March 26, 2021 and is serving a 23-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter with the use of a deadly weapon as a second striker. 

While incarcerated, Mackey was sentenced to two years and eight months by Sacramento County on Jan. 26, 2024 for assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon/instrument as a second striker, an in-person offense.
