California's lieutenant governor calls for legal options to remove Trump from 2024 primary ballot

Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis says she wants the California Secretary of State to look for legal options removing Donald Trump from an upcoming ballot.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis is calling for the Secretary of State to search for legal options that would remove Donald Trump from the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot.

This comes after a divided Colorado Supreme Court ruled to declare Trump ineligible for the White House under the U.S. Constitution's insurrectionist clause — thus removing him from their state's ballot, according to the Associated Press.

"There will be the inevitable political punditry about a decision to remove Trump from the ballot, but this is not a matter of political gamesmanship. This is a dire matter that puts at stake the sanctity of our constitution and our democracy," said Kounalakis.

She says she hopes Secretary of State Shirley Weber acts fast as the list of certified primary election candidates will be announced on Dec. 28.
