WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Congressman John Garamendi (CA-08) announced Monday he was undergoing treatment for early-stage multiple myeloma, a form of treatable blood cancer.
“Like 1.9 million Americans each year, I recently received the dreaded call from my doctor informing me that I had cancer. I am thankful to have caught this early, and we are confident that I will soon be in remission,” Garamendi wrote in his post.
In his video, and later through a statement from his office, he says he stays vigilant about preventative screenings and care. He recently received a call from his doctor about needing a series of additional tests, leading to his diagnosis.
He began chemo-immunotherapy Monday at Kaiser Oncology in Sacramento, according to his office. Treatment is expected to last a few months.
He says he will be limiting travel to Washington and other public events during the chemotherapy process but will continue working on projects for his constituents in Contra Costa and Solano counties.
