UPDATE: The victim was rescued by helicopter and air lifted to an area hospital Tuesday night. As of this post, law enforcement officers are still searching for the suspect.

A member of a search and rescue team has been shot and a suspect is at large in an active shooter situation developing in a state park in Nevada City.

The victim, who was with two other people, was shot in the hip Tuesday evening in a remote Yuba River canyon between the small towns of Edwards Crossing and Washington, said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.

"We’ve had search and rescue teams up in that area along the river bed for the past few days looking for a 75-year-old man who went on a hike and never returned," Royal said. "Today we had several different teams out there looking, including Placer County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue."

About 30 people and four helicopters are searching for the possible gunman. The three people who were part of the search group have radios with GPS, making them easy for rescue crews to find the volunteers and get the victim medical attention.

"It's a very difficult area to go through because of the steep terrain," Royal said. "At this point we have positioned staff to be able to coordinate off certain areas so we can use the helicopters to hopefully to find a heat source again so we can narrow where we need to be."

Sacramento police also sent a department helicopter to assist in the investigation.
