California returned ballot tally grows as Election Day nears

Election officials are making the voting process more transparent in hopes of increasing turnout.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On the final weekend before Election Day, 30% of California voters have returned their ballots, according to Political Data Inc. (PDI), which tracks turnout.

PDI says out of more than 22.5 million ballots issued, 6.73 million were returned by Nov. 1.

That number will increase as more in-person early voting centers opened Saturday, including 70 locations in Sacramento County.

“Most people on day one I have seen in a long time,” said Emily Mizokami, inspector for the Midtown Sacramento Vote Center and involved in the process since 2005. “We want you to vote early so please come in before election day. If you wait until Election Day and wait until the last minute, you are going to wait in a long line probably.”

“We are definitely seeing high turnout,” said Ryan Ronco with the Placer County Registrar of Voters.

Placer County election officials say people are excited to participate in this election, they opened 22 more early voting locations Saturday and introduced new technology, Sign, Scan and Go, where voters can bring in their ballot and see the process at work.

“They can just take that ballot out of their vote by mail envelope, put it right into the scanner while they are there. They get to see their ballot counted right in front of them and that has proved to be very popular in Placer,” Ronco said. “It is really a satisfying feeling to see your ballot counted in front of you.”
