SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A group of California home healthcare workers have been awarded over $860,000 in back wages and damages after an investigation revealed labor violations.
The Department of Labor says the four residential care providers denied the 58 workers minimum wage, overtime or both in some cases, and violated the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Among the major violators, Brisbane Guest Home Inc. in Stockton was required to pay $483,185 to 11 workers, while the owner of six residential care facilities in the Sacramento region owed $306,066 to 44 employees.
The Department of Labor says Brisbane Guest Home Inc., a residential care provider for people with developmental disabilities, failed to pay workers required overtime pay.
“Make no mistake, the Department of Labor is committed to stopping the exploitation of workers by residential care industry employers and holding them accountable for their unscrupulous employment practices,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Cesar Avila. “Our investigations find many of care workers harmed are women and low-wage earners, who can least afford to be denied their full wages.”
