SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Middle Class Tax Refund payments as high as $1,050 are going out to millions in the state who need financial relief.
However, while the payments started going out Friday, your eligibility determines how fast the money hits your mailbox or bank account.
According to the California Franchise Tax Board, funds will be sent to residents some time between Oct. 7 and Jan. 15, 2023.
Middle Class Tax Refund direct deposit payments for Californians who received the first Golden State Stimulus in 2021 are expected to be issued to bank accounts by Oct. 25.
The remaining direct deposits will go out between Oct. 28 and Nov. 14.
Meanwhile, the debit cards are being paid out in alphabetical order of the recipients' name.
Californians who received the Golden State Stimulus will have their payment issue date announced after Oct. 17. Non-Golden State Stimulus recipients will have their payment issue date announced after Nov. 7 if their last name begins with letters A-L, and those with last names from M to Z will have their dates announced after Nov. 21.
Determining Factors
Californians are only eligible for the direct deposits if they e-filed their 2020 CA tax return and received their CA tax refund by direct deposit.
You will be receiving the Middle Class Tax Refund in the form of a debit card payment if you meet the following criteria:
- Filed a paper return.
- Had a balance due.
- Received your first Golden State Stimulus payment by check.
- Received your tax refund by check regardless of filing method.
- Received your 2020 tax refund by direct deposit, but have since changed your banking institution or bank account number.
- Received an advance payment from your tax service provider, or paid your tax preparer fees using your tax refund.
