CALIFORNIA, USA — California is sending more than 60 police officers to help with security efforts at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin.
The deployment of 61 officers follows an attempted assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, but the plans for this deployment have been in place since May as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).
It includes 40 members of the California Highway Patrol and officers from police departments in Bakersfield, Fresno and Long Beach.
“Public safety transcends party lines. California is proud to support our law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin during this important political event. Working together, we are helping to provide a safe and secure environment for all participants at the Republican National Convention," said Governor Gavin Newsom.
The officers will be working with other law enforcement agencies at the event. Their duties could include crowd management, traffic control and public safety.
“It is critical we support our law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin and the safety of participants at this significant event," said Nancy Ward, Cal OES director. “California’s peace officers are well-trained and experienced in handling large-scale events, and we are confident in their ability to enhance the security operations in Milwaukee.”
