CALIFORNIA, USA — Showers linger through Wednesday and snow picks up in intensity into Wednesday evening. The heaviest period of snow is expected early and late morning Wednesday.
Fog in the valley is impacting visibility for the morning commute.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra from 4 a.m. Wednesday through 1 a.m. Thursday.
Snow totals will be heavy from this event and snow levels will begin around 4,000 feet, lowering to 2,500-3,500 feet by Wednesday. About 1 to 2 feet is expected above 4,000 feet with 3 feet possible over the highest peaks.
Travel could be difficult with chain controls and possible road closures.
Thursday will be dry and cold with patchy morning frost.
Another weather system moves toward the coast Friday with rain and snow chances increasing by the evening. Saturday will see valley locations with light rain in the morning and slowing by late afternoon.
Traffic
Here are the latest road conditions and an interactive Caltrans map.
Interstate 80
- Chain controls from 2.1 mi east of Baxter in Placer County to Truckee in Nevada County, according to Caltrans.
- Eastbound I-80: Eastbound trucks are being screened at Applegate, according to Caltrans.
- Westbound I-80: Westbound trucks are being screened 5 miles west of Reno /at Mogul in Washoe County, according to Caltrans.
Highway 50
- Chain controls from 1.6 miles east of Kyburz to Meyers in El Dorado County, according to Caltrans.
School Closures
Placer County
- Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is closed Jan. 10 for a snow day due to the forecast of heavy snowfall in the afternoon and expected hazardous driving conditions.
El Dorado County
- Lake Tahoe Unified School District said school is canceled Jan. 10 out of an abundance of caution for the approaching storm.
