California hasn't updated their Assault Weapons Identification Guide in 16 years.
But that's changing because of a relatively new California law that includes firearms with "bullet buttons," which leads to faster reloading, as an assault weapon. Assault weapons are typically banned under state law.
The state Attorney General's Office said they'll update the guide whenever there is a new series of firearms.
Ryan Getty is a criminal justice professor at California State University, Sacramento. He understands the intent of the law, but said there are always workarounds, whether that's the gun manufacturer or the actual consumer.
"Historically, with restrictions that have been added, eventually manufacturers pick up on, and lawyers look at what is the language of it and make slight modifications," said Getty.
The state says they'll release the new 2017 edition of the assault weapons guide "in the near future."
